V.K.V. Chalakkada is a small hotel serving decent meals and Chala (Sardine) fish fry every day except on Sunday afternoons. Situated near the High Court, this eatery is packed with regular customers especially during the lunch time. But, if you are a fan of fried fish and want to have a good meal at a reasonable price, this hotel is a nice place to be in.

You won’t have any difficulty in finding the place at lunch time as the aroma of fried sardine fish gets stronger as you come closer to this small eatery and can spot a crowd in and around it.
It is kind of hard to see from outside what makes this small restaurant click so much among the local populace. It is even at times impossible to gain an entry during the afternoon when the hotel is at its busiest. ‘Meals’ are the only item available at the restaurant during the lunch hours. Though the ‘Meals’ have nothing extraordinary about it, it tastes good nevertheless. Rice is served with one thoran, curry and pickle. Option of sambar, meen (fish) curry gravy and moru (buttermilk) is also available. The hottest selling side dish with the meals is ‘Chala or Mathi (Sardine) fish fry. The fish is dunk fried in oil to make it crispy. The fish fry is served into your plate from a huge platter by a waiter who roams around the dining hall with the dish owing to its constant demand.
Most of the patrons who visit this eatery are people working in the nearby Kerala High Court. Located underneath the canopy of a huge tree, the place feels cool even with so many people crammed inside such a small hotel.
Some of the other side dishes that can be tried from here are ‘Ayala (Mackerel) Fish Fry’, ‘Kozhuva (Anchovy) Fish Fry’ and ‘Kakka (Clam) Fry’. All these items are deeply fried till crispy which make for a great combination with the meals served here.

Chalakkada does not have anything to boast about that you cannot find in any other ordinary hotel in Kerala. But, if you are traveling near the High Court, it is suggested you visit this hotel and see for yourself what all the fuss about this place is.
