Situated at the west nada (Padinjare nada) Junction of the world famous Padmanabaswami Temple complex, Vankidesha Bhavan got noticed for their pure vegetarian, south Indian cuisine dishes. The best time to visit this restaurant will be during their morning breakfast hours which is open from 6 am to 1 pm and 3 pm till 10 pm. Varieties of dosa and Karavada are the dishes you should try from this place.
Majority of the employees at Padmanabaswami temple, most of them Brahmins, depend on this 6 decade old restaurant daily! Well, that’s pretty much says everything you need to know about the taste and quality of food served by Venkidesha bhavan restaurant, at Padijare nada Junction, Kottakkakam, which directly behind the world renowned Padmanabha Swami temple.
Breakfast dishes and snacks are the only items available at this restaurant which closes down during afternoon lunch hours. Made with a mix of vegetables, Avial served with their dosa, along with sambar and chutney make this dish different from the usual ones. A mouth full of avail and dosa is utterly tasty and feels different from the tested combination of sambar and chutney. A set of three poories served with masala of mashed potatoes and sliced onions, was also a delightful experience, as you can dip the hot poories in thick potato masala and had with the crunchiness of diced onions.
When it comes to snacks dishes, Karavada from this place steals the show with the slight tangy taste of mashed pepper balls. This round ball like dish made with lots of black gram is a good add on dish with any of their main dishes or you can always devour it with sambar and chutney.
This typical Tamil vegetarian restaurant experiences heavy rush during most times of their open hours, which is multiplied during special Hindu festivals and holidays. They have two main dining areas, in which the family room on the first floor is better furnished. Ground floor is furnished with plastic chairs and tables, where as the family area is furnished with wooden tables. Overall ambience of the restaurant is just average but the concern towards hygiene is top notch.
Restaurant has a special parcel counter opening to the road where you can pay and wait for the parcel to be delivered. Most of the waiters are experienced in the field but they lack professionalism and have an easy going way in their service. This place is well suited for anyone who visits the temple and in love with south Indian cuisine.
