For all the fish buffs out there Smitha hotel which is popularly known as Vaidhyarude Kada, is a must visit place. This legendry restaurant, located at Pathiramanal Junction, Kaipuram near Muhamma indulges you with the absolute taste of their seafood delicacies. Konchu, Karimeen, kalanchi, njandu, thus goes the list of seafood delights from this restaurant, which is open from 6 am till 9 pm on all days of the week, although its best to visit this place during their afternoon hours.
If you are travelling on 47 past Alapuzha towards Eranakulam, take a little detour towards Muhamma, when you see the signboard. From that point onwards anyone you stop by to ask will direct you towards Smitha hotel, popularly known among the foodies all around Kerala as Vidhyarude Kada. That almost explains everything you want to know about the popularity of this place
This place is nothing less than a legend among the seafood lovers, who you can watch for yourself, comes from distant locations just to have food from this place. Vidhyarude kada is on Alapuzha – Thannermukkam road, at Pathiramanal Junction, Kaipuram, which is barely 2 km away from Muhamma.
They sure do serve a lot of awesome dishes here, but their fried seafood items are the ones with more demand. Konchu fry is the star among their fried dishes, with the advantage being they offer it on a variety of price ranges according to the size of the item. Same goes for their Karimeen and njandu fry, all fried with special masalas prepared at the hotel which makes you gorge upon the whole dish after the first bite you take.
But ignoring, their gravy dishes completely will be a bitter mistake from your part. Meen thalakkari prepared with different fish heads are you must try from this place. This dish with loose orange hot red gravy is spicy and available in different price ranges according to the size of the fish dishes. Afternoon meals from this place also simple, goes very well with any of the special seafood dishes here. There is plenty of dishes to choose from too, in which most of the fish dishes are fresh water ones.
Although the name board of the hotel says Smitha hotel, if you enquire about this place with that name you wont find this place, as it is popular among the natives and foodies as Vidhyarude Kada. The reason behind this name is that, the owner of this place holds a degree from the Ayurvedha Medical College and people started referring this place as the physician’s (vaidhyarude) kada.
This quite small looking restaurant has another dining area just opposite the street, which they use during their afternoon rush hours. But the seating and other arrangements are just basic and the whole place is made just to accommodate as much people as they can, so don’t expect this place to be your regular comfortable restaurant. Even after all these arrangements you sometimes will have to wait if you reach their at the afternoon rush hours.
