Looking at this ordinary hotel from outside you wouldn’t even imagine who the famous patrons of this hotel were. Sree Guruvayurappan Hotel directly opposite to Gandhari Amman Kovil, Puthenchandha, Thambanur, got famous for their afternoon meals and fish fry dishes. Afternoon lunch hours will be the best time to visit this restaurant that is open from 6:30 am to 10 pm everyday.
The first thing you will notice when you enter this hotel will be the photos of the renowned persons who used to have food from this place. This was a regular luncheon of APJ Abdul Kalam, former President of India, while he worked in ISRO at Thumba. So does the famous singer Yesudas, who always make sure to visit this place whenever he comes to Trivandrum.
This restaurant that functions in a converted home doesn’t have anything extraordinary to tell about the ambience of this place except for the importance they give to the cleanliness and hygiene. They have tried to maintain the homely feel they have in their ambience in their dishes too.
Meals at this restaurant looks kind of ordinary till the point you taste the samya payasam they serve with the meals which is just delicious. Their meals by itself are quite complete with three side curries, pappadam, picle and various selections of gravies. Ney meen or seer fish is a great add on dish you could try with their meals, which is marinated with local masalas and fried dry in oil is just outstanding.
Kanava thoran, prepared with squid, has very dry masala and a spicy taste, is a dish you could try from this place other than their fish delicacies. Afternoon lunch hours are their rush hours usually, but during hindu holidays they experience constant rush from morning to evening.
The owner of the restaurant is present almost at all times during the open hours and directly manages the whole activities of the restaurant. Service at this place is fast but don’t expect anything more than that. Furnished with wooden chairs and steel tables, this place looks well above its class with its cleanliness and hygiene.
Traditional methods of preparation are cited as the main reason for the taste of the food served by this three decade old restaurant. Even though its not all those different in its looks from another ordinary restaurant, the food they serve certainly make them set a benchmark for other restaurants to follow.
