Located behind VedivechanKovil Street, there are a number of shops, most of them in front of houses, that serve a variety of snacks that are popular among customers for the homely taste and quality. Neyyappam, Pakkavada, Achappam, Kaliyodakku, MunthiriKothu, Murukku are some of their famous snack dishes. Shops on this street will be open from 7 am to 8 pm every day but evening time will be best suited to visit this place.
Most of them from ShaivaVellalar cast have been doing this job for generations and those culinary skills achieved over generations cannot be replaced by any mass-producing machines. Handmade with homely quality is the biggest plus point of the snacks served at the shops on this street. As most of the dishes are prepared on order for pregnant ladies to have during each month of pregnancy, although their dishes are a bit on the pricier side, they give utmost care to quality of the dishes.
These shops are located on Venganoor Street, Punnamoodu behind VedivechanKovil Road. While you are traveling from Karamana to Balaramauram, you have to take right just after VedivechaanKovil to reach this street. None of the shops have parking, but as the road is not that busy, you can park by the roadsides.
Murukku, Neyyapam, Pakkavada, Achappam, Kara Seva, MadhuraSeva, MundhiriKothu, Kali Odakka, Madakkass, Booriyaan are some among their wide varieties of snacks available at these shops. As none of these shops sell their items to other shops in the city, the only way to know the taste of these dishes is to come down to this place or put an order in for their snacks, and they will deliver it to you if the quantity is sufficient. They say if they sell the items to other shops then they will have to definitely compromise on quality to compete with similar dishes in the market.
As the prices are a bit higher than the market rate, you wonder what makes the dishes so special as most of these items are readily available at every other bakery in the city. To get to know the amount of trouble they go through in preparing these dishes by hand and authentically, you should definitely visit this place once and see. For instance, they manually prepare Murukku by twisting dry batter into a swirling circle and later frying it in oil.
The first shop in this street was started at least fifty years back, and as the time passed, more households came into this business. The dedication and commitment of the street in perfecting their dishes on each passing day kept this place alive after all these years.
