Hotel Shylaja is a definite place to visit near Thalassery if you are a big fan of nadan meals and fish items. Located at Chonadam, on the way to Koothuparambu, this restaurant is open from 11.30 pm to 8 pm throughout the week except on special holidays. It would be best to come during the lunch and enjoy a fulfilling meal and varieties of seafood items from here.
This small hotel, meagerly furnished with wooden chairs and benches,functions in an old building. Though this ordinary restaurant lacks pomp and glamour, it attracts lots of customers mainly because of the tasty food served here.
Hotel Shylaja at Chonadam is run by a family and is named after the restaurateur who is also the head chef of this hotel- Mrs. Shylaja. Chonadam is four kilometres away from Thalassery, on the way to Koothuparambu. This restaurant is located just two hundred metres away from the Chonadam Junction.
‘Fish Curry Meals’ is the most popular item here. Served in banana leaves, the meal comprises one vegetable curry, fish curry and ozhichu curry. It is available at the cheapest rate possible. A fish fry is a good add-on dish to this meal. There are at least five different types of fishes available for the customers to choose from. ‘KoonthalRoast’ is a very spicy item from this hotel. Roughly chopped pieces of squid and thick masala give a homely taste to this deep brown coloured dish.
‘Meen Mutta Thoran’ is another awesome dish to try from here. It is prepared in a limited quantity and gets over very fast. So, come early, preferably during the starting of the lunch hour to grab a bite of this delicious item till its stock lasts. ‘Thala Curry’ is a special preparation of fish curry made using the head of the fish. The curry has a deep red colour and spicy taste.
Besides, seafood items, varieties of chicken and beef dishes are also served here. Different snack items are available during the evening.The restaurant has a separate kitchen and the family members are only the cooks and are the people who serve food to the customers. They try to maintain a homely taste and quality in the foodpreparation.
There is a good parking areaon the road across the restaurant. Hotel Shylaja draws in patrons from all walks of life who love to have tasty food from here.
