A decent restaurant with authentic Kerala Shappu food items- Shappu Curry offers varieties of seafood and the extra spicy preparation of dishes is the specialty of this place. Open only during lunch hours from 12pm to 3 pm, this restaurant is situated just behind Maharajas College atT.D. Road.
Want to taste ‘shappu’ food without the smell of toddy and the loose talks by drunkards? Shappu Curry behind Maharajas College at T.D. Road is the destination. You can get to savour great Kerala non-veg food items with an extra spiciness like the ones served in usual toddy shops.
The types of people visiting this place have been taken into consideration while setting up the eatery. There are two distinct sections- One for the regular customers, while the other is a special ‘shappu’ setting for family and other patrons.Be it the mat used as partitions between the counters, the covering of the walls or even the lamp shades, bamboos have been used extensively for creating the ambience of a toddy shop. The entire look indeed compliments the theme of the restaurant.
The place is open only during lunch hours from 12pm to 3 pm and it usually gets houseful by one o’clock. So, to avoid the rush, it’s better to reach early. Seafood items are the most inviting dishes from the menu. Like any Kerala hotel offering good seafood cuisines, Shappu Curry has also focused on ‘Karimeen (Pearl spot) Pollichathu’. The dish pays off well with the fresh fish fried till it is crispy from outside and juicy from inside. The extra spiciness of the added pepper creates an eccentric taste.
‘Thala Curry Roast’ is another dish to try out here. A whole piece of fish head is roasted in masala and served with gravy. The head of Vatta (Bluefin Trevally) fish is the best one for this preparation. The juicy and fleshy fish head with the spicy masala makes it appear even more appetizing. ‘Crab Roast’ tastes equally good. The dish comprises small crunchy pieces of crab shell that are chewed to enjoy the succulent flesh inside.
Well, if you are a person who prefers to go low on the spicy meter, then the dishes here would be quite unappealing to you. But nevertheless, you would be convinced to give it a try especially after you get to witness the rush at this restaurant. The service by the staff though not very cordial, it would not matter to you much as long as they serve good tasty food.
