Started back in 1953, Shanthilal S Mithaiwala is one of the oldest running sweet shops in the Fort Kochi area. This shop is located directly opposite Gujarathi School on Gujarathi Road, Mattanchery and serves almost every type of North Indian Sweets and Savouries. They are open from 8:30 am to 9 pm from Monday to Saturday and closes by 4pm on Sundays. Jilebi, Gathya, Kathori, Mysore Paak, Badhusha etc are some of the famous sweets from this place.
Fort Kochi is basically a melting pot of different cultures from all over India and abroad. Anglo Indians, Marathis, Gujarathis, Jews thus goes on the list of different cultures coexisting at this little piece of land. Gujarathis is one of the prominent and oldest settlers here and they have their own school and cultural centre in Mattancheri area.
Shanthilal S. Mithaiwala, started back in 1953 is one of the longest running Gujarathi establishments in the whole city. Known by its founder’s name, this small eatery is presently run by the third generation of the family. Exclusively prepared snacks and sweet dishes are the main speciality of this place.
This bakery is located at the heart of Mattancheri on Gujarathi Road, opposite to Gujarathi School. Located close to New Road Junction, it is very easily accessible if you are in Mattanchery area. One of the main problems customers face is the lack of parking space for this eatery located on a rather congested street.
This place was first opened as a small tea shop slowly developed into a sweet and savoury shop by Mr Shanthilal. This place is still a bustling tea shop for the locals who flock the bakery for their special Masala Chai. Their small dining area is often crammed with regular customers but you can always buy and take home their assorted sweet box which has all their famous sweets and savoury items.
Jilebi, Gathya, Kathchori, Mysore Paak, Badhusha, Kaju Pathli, Samosa, Dothla, Carrot Halva etc are some of their must try items. All of the items are prepared in the kitchens next to the restaurant and right across the road.
The taste of their sweets dishes attracts most of their outsiders who visits this place. Many people visit this place to pre order items for celebrations and special occasions. Reasonable pricing and authentic Gujarathi taste is the main crowd pullers to this otherwise normal looking bakery.
