Hotel Sagar is one restaurant that doesn’t require an introduction to any foodie who has been to Calicut. Located at Mavoor Road, Kozhikode near KSRTC Bus Stand, this hotel serves a variety of food items from 6 am till late night at 2on all days of the week. So, depending on what you wish to have you can come here at any convenient time of the day. Meals, Parotta andMeen Curry, Pathiri Meen Porichathu, Chicken Biriyani available here are an all-time hit among its customers.
Hotel Sagar has etched its own place in a gastronome’s map. The journey of this hotel down the years is in itself a unique story that reveals that with tasty food and customer satisfaction anyone can become a successful name in the hotel industry.
The owners first started this hotel at 11 Mile in Kozhikode with a menu comprising Kanji, Kappa and fish fry which attracted a lot of customers. Following the grand success of that hotel, they started another outlet at Kunnamangalam by the name of Parivar. But their first hotel in Calicut city was established in 1978 at Mavoor Road near KSRTC Bus Stand. The position of this restaurant in the midst of hustle and bustle of the city was another reason behind its much fame and glory that cross borders beyond Calicut. A branch of this hotel is also situated near the flyover down Mavoor Road. The tale behind naming this hotel is also interesting. K.T Hamsa Haji, the founder of this restaurant, made up the name-Sagar from the names of his four children.
If you are thinking to have breakfast from here, then you must try their ‘Parotta and MeenCurry’- a unique combination that is available only till the afternoon. Hot pan fried parotta with minimum oil is served with a sour fish curry. The single piece of fish in thin gravy garnished with sliced chilly pieces leaves a lingering taste in your mouth.
‘Pathiri Meen Porichathu’ is an evening specialty. The dish comprises very thin Malabari Pathiri (pancake made of rice flour) along with a single piece of juicy fish fry and fish gravy. The taste of the soft Pathiri and tender fish fry is just marvelous. ‘Meals’ available in this hotel have a huge demand. It’s a plate that offers rice, three types of side curries, a fish curry and payasam as the winding up dessert item. Besides, they also provide dry chilies, pappadam, pickle and curd.
‘Chicken Biriyani’ is another dish from this place that gives a tough competition to the meals in terms of its popularity among the patrons here. The biriyani has chicken pieces cooked with light masalas and is served with pappadam, salad and pickle.
Hotel Sagar has three different dining areas. One on the down floor is open all throughout the day and is for the local customers. The dining area upstairs has better a furnishing and service while the air-conditioned family space offers a good premium ambience. There is also a good parking area available in front of the restaurant. As the customers keep pouring in, the service gets a bit delayed at times. So, if you have the patience, you might get to try some great food here.
