Rahmaniya Hotel at Chalai Market in Trivandrum famous for the one and only dish served here- Fried Chicken with Chapathi. Closed during special holidays, this hotel is open from 11 am to 3 pm in the afternoon and 4:30 pm to 9 pm in the night week long. Their popularity lies in ‘Fried Chicken’ prepared from tender, juicy chicken using special recipe and natural spices with lot of chilli seeds that are fried and served along with the dish.

Detailed Write-up

Arguably there won’t be any other restaurant in Kerala which is famous for the only dish they serve. Rahmaniya Hotel started in 1949 has been serving a single dish- Fried Chicken popularly known as ‘Kethel’s Chicken’ ever since its inception. ‘Kethel’ is the name given to the founder of this special chicken fry recipe by his customers.

Unlike the restaurants they have across other districts in Kerala which are fully air-conditioned and well furnished, the one in Trivandrum though old, has retained its original ambience down the decades. This well-maintained hotel is situated at the end of a long lane of shops in the road directly opposite to Gandhi Park leading to Chalai Market. 

This place has on offering the same dishes as the other branches of the restaurant but with a different style. The dish is served in paper leaves with chapathis that are bit thick, small and have undusted flour still on it. But it is not for the chapathis that people throng this hotel. Their popularity lies in ‘Fried Chicken’ prepared from tender, juicy chicken using special recipe and natural spices with lot of chilli seeds that are fried and served along with the dish. The best thing about the fried chicken is that they are not too oily but still has a yummy finger-licking taste. Unlike in their other outlets, the chicken here is charged according to per piece and not per plate basis. Gravy with shredded chicken pieces,lemon pickle and lemon juice is also served with this special dish. ‘Liver Fry’ is another item available which you can choose instead of the ‘Fried Chicken’.

This hotel is furnished with wooden tables and benches arranged in rows and columns to accommodate maximum number of customers. As there is no ventilation, having food from this place can be a sweaty affair. No matter what time of the day, you can see a constant rush at this place.

There is a parcel counter at the entrance laid out with few chairs for the customers to sit and wait till their orders get ready. Rahmaniya Hotel has another branch in Trivandrum itself near Pattom for the ones who prefer a more comfortable ambience.
