Famous for its ‘nadan’ Kerala dish combos, this small hotel without any name is popularly known as Puttu kada. Located at Pallikkadavu, Kumbalam near St. Mary’s Church, the restaurant is open only during the night from 7 pm to 3 am and closed on Sundays. But these timings are highly unreliable so it’s advisable to call up the owner and confirm before visiting this place. Puttu with Beef Curry, Kappa and Chicken Curry are the two main combos to try from this eatery.
Puttu Kada as this hotel is popularly known among the locals became famous for its dishes prepared in authentic Kerala style. It was started by Joseph in 1959 and is presently run by his son. This restaurant was initially operational 24x7 but later its working time was curtailed only to evening and early morning hours.
Located bit inside from the Kumbalam Junction on the Highway, this hotel is difficult to get to without any proper directions. You need to take a right turn towards Kumbalam just before the Aroor Bridge when travelling from Aroor tollbooth. Then head straight for two kilometres to Pallikkadavu and turn left from there to reach Puttu Kada. This place is easily recognizable because of the two churches facing each other. Parking area is available for two-wheelers in front of the hotel. But if you are coming by car it’s better to park the vehicle on the main road and walk up to the restaurant.
This hotel got its name from its famous dish ‘Puttu and Beef Curry’.Hot Puttu served along with spicy and well-cooked beef gravy makes for a delightful treat. ‘Kappa and Chicken Curry’ is another famous combination from this eatery. This dish comprises soft, smooth Kappa and spicy chicken curry. Use of excess amount of onion makes the gravy thicker than usual.
‘Chicken Fry’ is the only other dish available in this restaurant apart from the other two combos. The crispy fried chicken with masala granules is a widely popular dish here among the youngsters.
Puttu Kada functions in an old-building and there is nothing grand about the place. The dining area barely illuminated with two or three tubelights is filled with few tables and chairs to accommodate the customers. The owner of this restaurant is also the main cook here which accounts for the considerable delay in service as there is only one person to manage everything.
