Pillai Snacks is a small but decent South Indian vegetarian hotel in Calicut city. This restaurant is situated near Kallai Road and Link Road Junction. An early bird, Pillai Snacks pulls up its shutters at 3.30 during the wee hours of the morning and serves customers till 8:30 in the night on all days except on Sundays. It’s better to come in the morning to enjoy a breakfast of ‘Thattu Dosa’- the most famous dish of this restaurant.
Good quality tasty food available at a decent price is what makes Pillai Snacks a favourite food joint in Calicut. Though small in size, this restaurant has a good ambience and has not compromised with hygiene and cleanliness when compared to other similar hotels.
Pillai Snacks initially functioned from a shop at Link Road until recently when it got shifted to Kallai Road. Presently, this hotel is located at Kallai Road and Link Road Junction. Started in 1939 by Ramakrishna Pillai, this small age-old outlet is now run by his family members.
‘Thattu Dosa and Chammandhi’ is the dish that made this ordinary looking hotel famous. The Dosa you get here is thick and small and is prepared over hot tawa that gives it a slight brownish tinge. Sambar and extremely sour and salty chammandhi is served alongside that goes very well with the hot dosa.
‘Poori Masala’ is another popular item here. An example of a good poori can be the one served in this restaurant. Though the poori is not crispy, the masala used in the preparation accounts for its excellent taste. A generous amount of ghee is used in preparing the crispy ‘Masala Dosa’ stuffed with a thick filling of masala. This dish is served with ulli chammandhi, sambar, chutney, and kattichammandhi.
Pillai Snacks has two main dining halls. Apart from the rectangular dining area that you can see from the outside, there is also a dining space available on the back side of the restaurant. The back side hall is smaller in size and is usually unoccupied till the main dining area gets filled up. So even if the hotel might seem full from the outside, there is a possibility that you might get seat in the dining area on the back side to enjoy the food here.
You wouldn’t find a parking space for your car here but there is a small area in front of the hotel for two-wheelers. Service at this restaurant where snacks and breakfast items are only available is quite fast and efficient.
