The story of this restaurant started with a chef who worked years abroad started dreaming about returning home to start his own restaurant in his hometown. They first started as a homely meals centre in front of their house, which served fresh backwater fish items prepared in authentic Kerala style.
Baiju Lorenz, the head chef and owner of the place says that the ideology remains the same although it has grown way past a small homely meals centre. Periyar Restaurant is located just before the Varapuzha Bridge on N.H 17 when you are traveling from Edappally area.
Located right beside the river, this place has a mesmerizing view. They have set few chairs and tables right beside the river side for their patrons to enjoy the beauty at its best while enjoying their dishes. Visit this place early for their lunch hours to enjoy the serene atmosphere of peace and tranquility, because as the lunch time catches up, all hell breaks loose in terms of flocking masses.
This place is famous for their wide varieties of fish dishes they serve. They do serve big single freshwater dishes, but the owners themselves admit the fact that their customers prefer their small fish dishes that are fried crisply. Pallathi, Kozhuva, Nandhan, Mandhal, Kola etc. are some among their most demanded fish varieties. Meals from the place are another crowd puller to this place during their lunch hours and pretty much has everything one looks for in a perfect Kerala meals.
The whole restaurant is still managed by the family members of the owner, never to miss that homely touch from this place. Furnished with just basic furniture this place still manages to pull of looks that will appeal to family customers and travelers. They also have pretty good parking area inside their compound maintained by security personnel to assist you.
They do serve local Kerala dishes for breakfast but pull down their shutter by five pm and doesn’t offer dinner. Service of this place is pretty pleasant with polite waiters who patiently answer your queries even during their rush hours.
