Paragon Restaurant has a single branch in Calicut and it is located at Kannur road near the head post office beneath the fly over. From Bank Road you have to take a turn just after crossing ‘Delecta Bakery’ and go beneath the fly over and further take U-turn on Kannur road to reach this restaurant. Established in 1939 by Govindan, Paragon Restaurant has been delighting gastronomes for over seven decades now and is presently run by the third generation of his family.
Four separate dining areas are set up keeping in mind the different types of people visiting this restaurant. The first dining area is meant for the local customers who mostly like to enjoy the local Malabar cuisines. Hence, none of the specialty dishes are served in this dining area. There is a special dining hall and a comparatively small air-conditioned dining space along with it. This area functions as a proper multi-cuisine restaurant. A deluxe air-conditioned area is available on the first floor for premium customers. The dishes served in this floor are prepared in a separate kitchen and the orders are delivered to the respective tables by more experienced waiters.
‘Chicken Biriyani’ cooked in authentic Malabar Dum Biriyani style is the most popular dish here. This biriyani is commonly prepared for all the four different dining areas. Truly Malabar Dum Biriyani can’t get better than this. The chicken inside the finely-cooked biriyani rice is tender and juicy and is served with pickle, salad and chammandhi.
‘Fish Mango Curry’ is a specialty item from their sea food menu. The price of the dish varies with the type of fish used in the preparation. The gravy is prepared with pieces of raw mango and coconut milk that makes this dish finger-licking good. This curry is a must-try along with Vellayappam. ‘Beef Chilli’ is an evening special cuisine of this restaurant. Water is not used in the preparation of this dish to boil the beef. Instead the meat is left in the pan for long time to get cooked by itself until it shrinks and the flesh becomes soft.
‘Special Meal’ comprises an array of items that accounts for a fulfilling treat. The rice is served with two types of fish curry- yellow and red in colour, five different types of side curries, curd, payasam, pappadam, chutney, chammandhi and pickle.
