Claimed as the pioneers who introduced Porotta and Beef dishes in Thrissur district, Olans is located at Karuvannur, near Karuvannur Valiya Palam. Beef, Porotta, Kheema are some of their famous and most demanded dishes. Olans Kada is open from 5:30 am till 9 pm every day but this place can be enjoyed at its best during their afternoon lunch hours.
This small restaurant at Karivanoor, which is close to hundred years old, has a fascinating history. Started by the great grandfathers of the present owners for the workers who worked at the docks of the river and travelers who passed on boats, this restaurant's story up to the present time is mind-blowing.
There were two hotels in the beginning at both ends of the shores of the river, and they were just small teashops. Those shops without any name got this peculiar name from a teasing given by the customers long back. At that time, the tea served at this place had more water in it than milk and resembled like ‘olan’ curry and the customers started referring the place as ‘Olan Kada’, which later got stuck to the restaurant. Much later when they had to register the place, they adopted this name itself, which their customers gave them.
When you are traveling from Kodungallur, this place is located after Iringalakuda on the left side, at Karivanoor, right after Karivanoor Valiya Palam. Now the place has transformed, so does the hotel, but it is still situated at the same location it was when it started. This is evident from the fact that the restaurant has sunk down from the road level with each modification of the road. You can park your vehicles on the roadside right beside the restaurant.
They have said to have introduced Porotta and Beef in Thrissur district as early as 1955. People from faraway places used to come to this place to taste this new dish at that time. Still their Porotta and Beef has retained that specialty which pulls scores of customers to this restaurant.
Kheema, another special dish from the place was introduced back in the seventies when the present owners went abroad, came back and reopened the restaurant. They serve their special Ghee rice instead of Meals during afternoon hours and even after being so close to a river, they have never served fish dishes at this restaurant at all.
This single Hall restaurant is maintained very neat and hygienic and can be very well be visited with your family members. They also serve Breakfast dishes in the morning and various snacks items during evening hours. However, this place is always going to be engraved in the minds of gourmets for their awesome Porottas and superb Beef dishes.
