How many restaurants in Kerala has the street leading to it named after the restaurant itself? Only a few would come in this category. But the fact is that almost all such hotels have a huge acceptance among the people of that particular area to have achieved such a feat. Hotel Odhens located at Odhen Road in Kannur is one among them. This 60-year-old hotel is a popular landmark in the city known to anyone who is from Kannur. Odhen Road which directly leads to this restaurant is just 500 metres away from Pilliar Kovil Road.
The ‘Meals’available in this restaurant are not complete without any of the fish fry special items. ‘AyakooraFry’ is the fish fry item most in demand along with the meals served here. The fish is fried in a tawa with special masalas. It is perfectly cooked so that the flesh inside is juicy and soft. ‘Prawns Fry’is served in a good quantity for the price one pays for it. The delicious masala spread on top of the dish enhances the taste of the deep fried prawns. ‘Koonthal Fry’ is another dish you must try from this restaurant. With very thick paste of awesome masala smeared on top of the swell-cooked squid, this dish has an incomparable taste.
‘Meenmutta Fry’ is a seasonal delicacy which is available only during the monsoons. ‘Fish Curry Meals’ available here is slightly expensive than other ordinary hotels. Served in banana leaves, the meals comprise fish parts curry, one vegetable curry, pickle and different ozhichu curries to select from. Kanji vellam is served instead of water with the meals.Only fried seafood items are available here.
The restaurant has a long rectangular dining area with granite tables attached to the walls and steel stools with cushion tops. The afternoon lunch time rush at this restaurant is something you can’t see in any other similar hotels. People wait beside the tables for their turn to sit and have food. Customers don’t need to throw away the leaves they eat in. Though the place lacks a parking area, you can park your vehicle along the road side leading to the restaurant.
Having food at Hotel Odhens is indeed an experience. If you have a busy schedule, then it would be ill-advised to go to this restaurant after 1:30 pm. The service provided is exemplary. The courteous behaviour of the waiters and tasty food available at reasonable rates are the main reasons behind the huge success of this restaurant.
