Vijayalakshmi Vilas, popularly known as Nair Kada, is famous for its awesome idli and mutton curry combo. This hotel near Sulthanpettu Junction, on Coimbatore Road, was started back in 1948, and is open on all days of the week for almost 24 hours. The best time for you to visit this restaurant will be after 6:30 pm when they start serving their idali mutton curry combo.
As the Locals popularly call it, Nair kada, has been located at the same spot for decades and saw the town change around it. This restaurant started in 1948, has a rich history that goes back to the period of Indian Independence, is a meeting point of locals in the city as well as for many renowned celebrities and politicians, who pass through the town.
This place is located just fifty meters away from the busiest and most narrow Junction in Palakad town. When coming from Sulthanpettu to Chandranagar, this restaurant is on the left side on Coimbatore road.
You might have seen some weird combinations offered by restaurants, but only a very few makes you wonder, why haven’t I tried this one earlier? Well, Idli and Mutton curry Combination from this restaurant is one such dish. The popularity of the dish lies in the combination; thick gravy mutton curry prepared with fresh mutton, which tastes heavenly, along with soft idlies that are best had mashed in with rich gravy of the mutton curry.
Chicken curry, made with lavish amount of coriander and two big chunks of chicken, with loose gravy, is another dish people try instead of mutton curry in this combo. Side dishes served, makes the Masala dosa, from this restaurant a must try dish. Katti chammandhi, chutney and Kandhi chutney, makes for an awesome combination with their masala dosa.
This is one of those restaurants, which have maintained that authentic retro Kerala ambience. You will be amazed to find that, they operate in the same building where they started functioning back in 1948, which they have modified with periodic maintenance to ensure safety. For such an old hotel, they have neat and clean furnishing, along with spacious dining area, although their entrance looks small.
Other than their food, one other major highlight of this place is service. For the last 65 years, they have offered their customers, 24 hours service. They just pull down their shutters, during early morning hours, from 2:30 am to 3:30 am, just to clean for the next day and to change shifts.
