Hotel Modern, contrary to its name, has been serving customers ever since 1926 and is famous for its afternoon meals. It is located at M.G.Road, Thalassery opposite B.E.M.P. High School. The working hours of this restaurant are from 12-4.30 in the afternoon and 7:30-10 in the night throughout the week. But lunch would be the perfect time to come here. And don’t forget to order for Meals and Mutton Chaps- the two dishes you must try from this hotel.
Hotel Modern can be easily overlooked by a person walking through M.G.Road. First of all, there is no huge banner or signboard hanging to attract customers. Also, the entrance of this restaurant is pretty small for one to notice in a quick glance. But once you enter the hotel, you are sure to be left surprised by itsspacious interior.
The hotel is located directly opposite to the main gate of B.E.M.P High School at M.G Road, Thalassery. One of the main problems with this restaurant is the absence of parking area. However, you can find parking space along the byroads just after the school compound.
‘Mutton Chaps’ is the most famous dish of this hotel. One single chunk of mutton in thick gravy is served with lots of onions. The excessive use of onions adds a taste of slight sweetness to the gravy. ‘Fish Curry Meals’ is the item most in demand during the lunch hours. The meals,which are available at a very reasonable price,are served with one vegetable curry, ginger pickle and fish curry. Rasam and Pacha moru are also served in small glasses along with the meals.
‘Ayala Mulakittathu’ is Mackerel fish in orange coloured gravy that is not so spicy in taste. This dish makes for a perfect combination with the ‘Meals’. ‘Mutta Varavel’ is another low-priced but tasty dish available here. Scrambled eggs are sautéed with green chillies and masalas to prepare this deep yellow colour dish.
All the special side dishes are taken around in a steel basin and showed to the customers to select from. It is sure to enhance the appetite of anyone who sees these delicious food items. This system of service is followed by most of the other Thalassery restaurants too but Hotel Modern claims to be the one to have started it.
The restaurant, though looks small from the outside, has three dining areas- two on the ground floor and one on the first floor. There are separate seating arrangements for ladies. Most of the customers visit this hotel on a regular basis. Hotel Modern, furnished using desks and benches, has tried to maintain that old school look and has indeed succeeded in doing so.
