Meenkkada as its name denotes in Malayalam is all about fish and seafood. Sizable fishes they serve and one of kind masala used commonly in all their dishes makes this hotel near Yakkara Bridge, opposite Anu marbles, one of the most sought out eatery in Palakad. Although this place is open from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm, the most preferable time to visit this place is right after they open before the lunch time rush sets in.
Palakkad town has some fine restaurants inside its city limits itself. Then you might wonder why people drove to Yakkara, some good 5 kilometers on the outskirts of the town to have food from a restaurant that looks like a shack. Well looks can indeed be deceptive! This small restaurant has no comparison in Palakad if you are a true seafood lover.
Finding this place can become a grueling task as there are no signboards or nameplates to indicate it’s a hotel. The position and looks of the hotel doesn’t help either. This restaurant actually functions on the ground floor of the owner’s house and is located below ground level from the road. In short, this place doesn’t invite a second glance from people who pass by. When coming from palakad side, this restaurant is on the left side opposite Anu marbles.
As they use a similar masala and preparation for all their fish fry dishes, the taste difference comes from the varieties of fish used. The big fishes fried as whole are their most sought after dish and they offer a wide variety of fishes to choose from for their customers. Karimeen, ayakoora, manthal, avoli, kannanmeen are some of the varieties of fish fries their customers get to choose from. Meals from this restaurant acts as something to much on while you gobble up their fish fry delicacies. Meals served in banana leaves have just two side curries for namesake and pappadam. Most of the customers come here just for their seafood rather than for their meals.
Kallummakkaya fry is prepared in a very spicy but enjoyable manner. Kallummakaya is dry fried but has the thick dark oily masala over it. This dish has the smell that by itself is mouth watering. Chemeen fry is also similar to the other fried items from this restaurant. Its not as dry as it should be but nobody has any complaints about it. Chemeen used at this restaurant is comparatively big in size and tastes good with the masala that makes the prawns very juicy.
This hotel is run by the owner’s family themselves. The main chef is none other than the wife of the owner who brings a homely touch to the food they serve with natural ingredients and preparing dishes as per order. The owner serves the customers and maintains a friendly relationship with his customers. Despite the disadvantage of a proper ambience, their relationship with the customers and exquisite seafood make them a class apart.
