A glass of toddy and some great Kerala dishes…..Doesn’t it sound to be a perfect combination? Well, indeed it is and what more you can ask when you can get to relish both under one roof. Kumarakom Toddy Parlour is one such place to be inthat serves authentic Kerala cuisine suitable for all sorts of customers. This toddy shop and family restaurant is located at Chankarampadi near Taj Hotel on the way to Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. The hotel is open from 9 am to 9 pm every day in a week. Karimeen Pollichathu, Crab Roast, Prawns Roast, and Duck Roast are some of the main dishes to try from here.
Kumarakom Toddy Parlour has become a distinguished food spot among the travellers for its great food and family-friendlyambience. This is a restaurant that offers good food at a reasonable price. The close-to-nature feel of this place is also a main reason behind its popularity.
Located on a straight stretch of road on the way to Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, between Lakshmi Beer Parlour and Taj Hotel at Chakrampadi, this restaurant isn’t much difficult to find. For it is always busy during the working hours and there will be vehicles parked in front of it.
‘Karimeen Pollichathu’ is an item most preferred along with the afternoon meals. The fish is first half boiled and then masalas are smeared over it before wrapping it in banana leaves and roasting. The authentic Kerala style preparation is the main highlight of this dish.‘Crab Roast’ from this restaurant also has a special taste. The crab is chopped into pieces and then cooked with special masala, making this dish a not-so-spicy but tasty delight.
‘Duck Roast’ is prepared by perfectly cooking the duck meat with pepper to do away with the distaste that usually people have towards duck dishes. It has thick, oily yellow gravy that tastes great. ‘Prawns Roast’ is another favourite seafood item from the menu here. This dish has a deep red colour without being too spicy. The quantity served is also decent enough. Overall, this particular prawn item is a hot pick that compliments best the tapioca dish available in this restaurant.
The ambience adds to the uniqueness of this place. There are huts of varying sizes for the customers to sit and enjoy the view of the nearby paddy fields. These huts are made in puddles of water and are elevated on poles. There is no other restaurant where one can indulge in the beauty of nature while having good food. It’s truly a beautiful experience.
Kumarakom Toddy Parlour gets the busiest during the lunch time. The kitchen is open for customer inspection at any time of the day. On the other hand, the furniture and the huts do not completely comply with the definition of hygiene. They look old and dirty but the feel of this place has no comparison.
