Kayees Restaurant is a paradise for all you biriyani lovers. The biriyani rich with ghee and tender meat is a brand name for mutton biriyani in Kochi. Kayee’s biriyani is famous for its unique taste available at a very reasonable price. This hotel situated at New Road, Mattancherry and has another branch near Jose Junction.
Biriyani hotels are dime a dozen in Ernakulam. But Kayees Restaurant has built up a brand name for itself by serving the most delicious biriyani in Ernakulam district that matches the likes of Thalasseri, Hyderabadi or Kozhikodan biriyanis in terms of popularity. Similar to the famous biriyanis from these places, the recipe of Kayees biriyani is a native of this particular area.
This restaurant was established way back in 1948 by Kayee, the founder and master cook who had modified the biriyani recipe into what it is today. The list of famous patrons of this hotel is endless. From world renowned painter M.F. Husain to Mollywood megastar Mammootty, different celebrities have frequented this place time and again to relish the delicacies here. The original hotel that operated from a century-old building has now been demolished and is under renovation.
If you are planning a trip to Mattancherry you can have the biriyani from their original shop at New Road. But if you are on the run just through the city you can always stop at their branch near Jose Junction at M.G.Road. Kayees son and grandson- Mustafa and Shabeer are the present owners of this hotel. They also directly supervise the preparation of the dishes here ensuring great quality and customer satisfaction.
Biriyani is the dish to look out for in their menu. If you wish to taste their main specialties i.e. mutton and chicken biriyani it is better to go to Mattancherry where the original restaurant is situated. The trip to Mattanchery is one you will never regret if you love to spend some time at the beach and cruise through the harbour area on boats. But if you are more interested in trying different varieties of this famed dish it is advised you visit the outlet at Jose Junction.
‘Mutton Biriyani’ of Kayees Restaurant is truly a treat for your taste buds and justifies the hype for it. The tender mutton pieces along with the rice, rich with ghee just melt in your mouth. Don’t be disappointed with the less quantity they serve for this utterly-butterly delicious dish will only leave you craving for more no matter how much you eat. To make this feast a grand affair you can add ‘Mutton Roast’ or ‘Mutton Masala’to compliment the chicken or mutton biriyani.Be carefulas the roast is bit spicy than usual. Also make sure to get the date pickle along with the biriyani you order. But the best thing is that you get to relish all these dishes without burning a hole in your pocket.
The complaint that was always heard about the original Kayees Restaurant was its age-old building and the cleanliness issues related to it. But all that is about to change as the old place is getting a face-lift and is expected to reopen within a year. Presently the hotel functions in the same building as Kayees Café which is just around the corner of the old structure. Overall ambience of the place is quite good except that it gets a bit too hot during summer. Being located in the busy stretch of Mattancherry streets ,another problem is the lack of parking area here.
The restaurant is open on all days from 8 am except for Ramzaan and on Bakrid. But if you want to eat the special biriyani here it is better to come between 11:30 am to 3 pm.
