Now don’t let your thoughts go astray! Although there is Kallu (liquor) in its name, this small shop originally named G.R Stores aka Kallu Kada, inside Ashramam ground opposite Ayurvedha hospital, has nothing to do with liquor. A bubbling beverage, known by the name Kallu Soda, awaits you at this shop which opens from 10:30 am to 9 pm on everyday except for Sundays.
Now the greatest dilemma would be what to call this place. The owner of this shop despise calling his shop Kallu Kada, which they have proudly named as G.R stores, but if you start walking around asking for this place by that name nobody will recognize it, but almost everyone in kollam city knows Kallu Kada and the famous Kallu Soda.
Everything about this place invites curiosity. The name Kallu Kada by which the shop is locally known means liquor shop in Malayalam, then comes the specialty of this place which is known popularly as Kallu Soda, even though it has nothing to do with liquor.
Technically speaking this dish is lemon soda that is available in every other local shop in Kerala, but the unique preparation of the dish makes it different from the usual drink. Making of this drink is something you don’t want to miss. They use the juice of two full lime into making of a single drink where others use one, along with both salt and sugar, but the real reason what makes their preparation a visual treat are the goli soda that are shaken up well, then slightly pressed on the marble on top and the soda come gushing out to churn up the whole solution into this bubbling drink, which is much vigorous and tasty than the usual lime sodas.
Cashew sarbath made with the grinded essence of cashew mixed with water and topped with cuss cuss is another sweet and pulpy dish you could try from here.
This place located inside Ashramam ground premises, opposite Ayurvedha Hospital, even though small, gives prime importance to health and hygiene. They use specialized ice machines with water filters to produce the ice they use in their drinks and the people who prepare drinks wear surgical gloves.
