Hotel Hero at Palace Road, opposite Sahitya Academy has been in Thrissur for almost 50 years now. The restaurant is open from 7.30 am to 11 pm every day except during special holidays. It functions from an old but well-maintained building and is well-known for its evening special dishes. There is also a bakery attached to the hotel.
Hotel Hero is not as small or congested as it might look from outside. The restaurant has two rectangular dining areas that can accommodate and handle the steady rush of customers especially during the peak time in the evenings and nights.
The place often looks crowded as the customers who come here to take away food parcels block the entrance of the restaurant due to lack of waiting area for them. The hotel has an open kitchen setup in the evening hours. Most of the dishes then are cooked and kept insideshowcases and in large vessels for the customers to see and place an order. This accounts for quick service as the dishes are not prepared only afterreceiving an order.
The dining areas have well-spaced sitting arrangements and are furnished using steel chairs and tables with granite tops. The simple colour scheme of cream and few photographs hanging from the walls give this old but well-maintained building the perfect finish it needed. Absence of dining rooms for families is a minor disadvantage.
Though the food is tasty, the quantity in which it is served here seems little less than the normal. Finely cooked ‘Duck Roast’ is one of the famous dishes of this hotel. It has a very spicy masala and a bit dry gravy that make for a good side dish with any type of Appam or Roti. Some seafood items are also included in the menu. ‘Meen Parinjil Fry’ is one of such delicacy. Turmeric powder used in the preparation renders a dull yellow colour to this dish and coriander accounts for its taste.
‘Kallumakaya Fry’ is also a good dish to have. This fry available here is really oily and tender which is a deviation from its usual chewy, dry form. You will not get this dish all the time because of the seasonal availability of Kallumakaya.
The best thing about Hotel Herois its quiet ambience. Though it won’t qualify as a typical dinner destination, it is a good place to visit with your friends or family and relish some great food at a reasonable price.
