This small restaurant which functions on the first floor of a building, on the side street opposite Indian Bank on Main Road, Chinnakkada, got noticed among the foodies in the city for the authentic pure Jain North Indian dishes they serve their patrons. They are open from 7 pm to 10 pm everyday and close down for 10 days during Deepavali.
If you start counting the restaurants in Kerala which serves authentic Jain vegetarian food restaurants in Kerala, the number will be countable with your fingers. This is why Deli café on the first floor of N.A.N.R complex, at a byroad opposite Indian bank at Main road, Chinnakkada, attracts a lot of customers, predominantly North Indians who has settled in the city.
This restaurant has nothing much to boast about except for the food they serve, as the building in which it functions itself is pretty old and they have set a pretty basic furnishing with plastic chairs and tables that looks pretty antiquated and battered from years of use. But these minor setbacks don’t seem to reduce the number of foodies who visit this place.
Varieties of rotties are prepared at this place using traditional oven called Ankatti. Fulka rotti and gopy fry is one such rotti and curry combination, with soft and puffy rotti dish and cauliflower fried nicely with masala. Aloo paratha with mashed potato filled rotti is a dish that could be had on its own, but felt even tastier with kadi pakoda, which has sweet tasting gravy due to yoghurt and two potato balls fried with gram that makes for an awesome combination.
A very common north Indian dish with a good demand at this restaurant is dal tadka, which is basically fried dal and chopped onion in tomato gravy topped with coriander leaves that felt great despite the fact that it had bit too much oil. Paneer batter masala which is available at every other vegetarian restaurant in Kerala is also available at its best here, with rich taste of butter and fresh paneer makes this dish in a whole different class than the usual dish.
They usually open from 7 pm and closes down by 12 but during Sundays they do open in the afternoons too, but people come enquiring about their opening hours sometimes even as early as 4 o clock in the evening. Main road is one way and pretty congested, Bank of India is the tallest building among the lot in Main road so its better to start parking when the building becomes visible and park at wherever you can find space.
