In a city well-known for delicious halwas, Delecta Bakery at Bank Road opposite Ashoka Hospital is sure to woo anyone with sweet teeth. Famous for its tasty halwas, this place is open from 8:30am to 9 pm on all days except Sunday when they open at 9 am till 1PM in the afternoon. Come anytime to relish the food here before night falls as most of their dishes get over by then.
Established in 1944, Delecta Bakery has been functioning from the outlet at Bank Road ever since its inception. Bank Road is located at the end of Mavoor Road from where you can turn towards Mananchira Square.
This bakery started by Shankaran, the founding father in a small shop has grown down the years. The owners later bought some of the nearby areas and expanded the bakery which is presently run by the third generation of Shakaran’s family. A fully functional bakery now, almost all the items sold here are prepared in the store itself. This shop has no other branches.
The ‘Black Halwas’ available here brought much fame to this bakery and gave it a celebrity status. The taste of this mouth-watering halwa is not only famous in Calicut but even outside the district. With each bite you can feel creamy oil oozing out leaving behind a divine sweetness that has never been tasted before. ‘Banana Halwa’ is another popular choice from their list of halwas. This very soft and smooth-as-butter sweet dish is bit different from the usual ‘chewy’ halwas that you get elsewhere.
‘Tea Biscuits’ from this bakery are an everyday item that has a huge demand among the customers here. It is prepared following a recipe that dates back to the 1950s. These crispy, mildly sweet biscuits are as good as the cookies which cost much more. ‘Flower Cake’available here has lots of nuts added to the cake giving it a crunchy chewy feel in an otherwise soft preparation. The taste of butter although mild is something that renders this dish a unique taste.
Besides the popular ‘Black Halwa’, badam, cashew, pista, pineapple, mix fruit, tender coconut are some of the other flavours of halwa that Delecta Bakery specializes in. You can also choose from different varieties of cakes, puffs and other baked items. Though they take prior orders, this place lacks a café or dine-in facility. As of now they only have take-away.
They do accept credit cards and offers good service. Parking space on the front side of the bakery is very limited but there is a paid parking facility right by the restaurant.
