Now here is a place which didn’t lose its simplicity and innocence over the years. This small shop commonly known as Damodharan Pappante kada is located at Shrirangapuram, near canal, Kodungallur. Famous for its Chiratta Puttu and Kadala Curry combination, this restaurant is closed on all Sundays and will be open from 4 am to 7:30 pm on every other day. Evening hours will be the most preferred time to give this variety eatery a visit.
The Canal infront of this small shop was once an active water way which was used for transporting good by boats. This shop was started to provide food to the people who came to unload the goods and the people who travelled through this area. Now the canal is no longer important and is shut down but this small shop still remains as the reminiscent of a past that no longer exist.
This place which didn’t even have a name plate is popularly known by the name of its founder, Dhamodharan who started this place some fifty years back. When you travel from Kodungallur to Thrissure, turn right towards the road leading to the canal at Shringapuram. You can park you vehicles on the roadsides of this less traversed road.
The whole place is made with plywood and wooden bars and thatched with tin sheets, which can barely hold twenty people at a time. This place looks like that typical Local tea shops you see in movies with wooden tables and benches for their customers to sit in and majority of their customers are locals who have been having food from this place since they where children.
At first they started this place as a just a tea and snacks shop and later added more dishes to their menu. Although their menu still looks frugal, whatever is there on the list is in a class of its own. Nadan Chiratta Puttu available during evening hours, which was added to their menu much later, gained immense popularity to this lace, with its authentic preparation and superb taste. Mutta curry, Kadala Curry, Kadala Roast are some of the side dishes they serve to complement their Puttu.
Kadala Curry and Thattu dosha is also something that could be tried from this place. Although the restaurant might look quite small, this place still maintains neatness and cleanliness, which is evident from customers from different social strata who come to this place. Very reasonable price and tasty dishes are the main reasons that make this place a must visit in Thrissur.
