A highway restaurant that attracts the attention of travellers with its name and homely afternoon meals- Daivam Hotel is located near Udaya Studio at Pathirapally on N.H. 47. This restaurant is open only during the lunch time from 12 pm to 4 pm on all seven days of the week. Meals and varieties of fish fries be it Chala or Ayala, are some of the dishes to try from here.
The name of this restaurant meaning ‘God’s Hotel’ will make any passerby take a look at it. Daivam Hotel was started almost 70 years back by the parents of the present owners. Initially the hotel was without a name but gradually people started to call it by its present name as the name of the owner’s housewas ‘Daivathinkal’. This is the history behind the unique name of the restaurant and it was later made as its official name.
When coming from Alappuzha, this hotel is situated on the left side of N.H. 47 just after Pathirapally. The restaurant is located close to the famous Udaya Studio. Though there is no parking space available here, you can see a long queue of vehicles stationed on the roadside in front of the restaurant during the afternoon lunch hours.
Its name was not the only reason that made this restaurant famous. The tasty meal served along with crispy fish fries was the major reason for it. The ‘Meals’ are served in banana leaves and comprises just rice, two vegetable curries and pickle. But it is the fish fries that make this meal so special. ‘Chala Fry’ is made by crisply frying the Saradine fish in oil. It tastes superb with the afternoon meals. ‘Ayala Fry’ or ‘Mackerel Fry’ is another variety of fish fry item available here. All the fishes are fried in minimum oil till crispy and most of the masalas are prepared by the owners of the hotel themselves.
The main customers of this restaurant are the employees in the nearby buildings while travellers too come here. The main cooks are the wives of the brothers who presently run the hotel. They even serve dinner for people who call and inform that they require food.
The hotel has a small rectangular dining hall furnished with desks and benches. A family dining space is also available with tables and chairs. When you come to enjoy a meal here remember to clear and throw the banana leave in which you have food in.
