Since the time of its inception in 1971 till date, Ambalappatt restaurant was famous for one thing and one thing only, their mouthwatering vegetarian south Indian cuisine. This place which is open from 7 am to 9 pm every day, is well known for their dosa dishes and other Kerala Breakfast dishes. The best time to visit this place located opposite LIC office, Pattom, will be during their breakfast hours.
Now everyone knows, south Indian breakfast dishes are not something that is rare in a city like Trivandrum. In fact, almost every other restaurant in the city serves these dishes. Then you might wonder what makes this place so special that people come to this place that not much of a looker in appearance or in ambience.
The main item that makes their otherwise simple dosa special will be the superb Katti chammandhi they serve with the dish, which has that slight sour taste which makes for an awesome combo to mix and had with their dosa. Ney roast, without the use of much oil or ghee, tasted great with the Katti chammandhi and other side dishes. The dish retains its crispiness only when had hot.
Uzhunnu vada is a snack item you can either add on with other breakfast dishes or had on its own. This dish with its crispy outer cover is at its best when had just after its prepared and is served with sambar and chammandhi. They serve almost all Kerala Vegetarian dishes and their afternoon meals also have wide popularity among their regular customers, majority of who are employees at the LIC right across the street.
This place is a bit below ground level and you have to walk down a flight of stairs to reach the dining area, which is minimally furnished and bears that old look all around. Apart from the main dining area, they also have some family cabins set up for their customers and furnished them with plastic stools and steel tables.
They only make limited number of items, to avoid wastage, so its always safe to get to this place a little early if you want to try all the dishes they have. They have small area infront of the restaurant where you can park your vehicles.
